Ryan Newell

OC Professor of Psychology Ryan Newell serves as the university’s Faculty Athletics Representative, an important role in the governance structure of the athletic department. He’s also the primary official bookkeeper for the OC men’s basketball team and thus often can be seen at the scorer’s table during home games in the Eagles’ Nest.

Newell earned his associate’s degree from Ohio Valley College in West Virginia, his bachelor’s degree from OC, a master’s degree in education from Central Oklahoma and his doctorate in guidance and counseling with an emphasis in family therapy and a minor in research and statistics from the University of Toledo in 1994.

After working in Toledo, Ohio, for six years in community mental health and the municipal court system, he came to OC in 1992. He teaches courses in Research Methods, Statistics, Abnormal Psychology, Cybernetics and Systems Theory and has served as faculty sponsor for OC’s Psychology Club, Psi Chi, since 1992, in addition to his role as the FAR, which he has held since 2001.

He also has served as chair of OC’s Department of Psychology and Family Studies since 2004.

Newell is an active member of the American Psychological Society and serves as president for the Oklahoma Psychological Society. He is also licensed as a Behavioral Practitioner in the state of Oklahoma and maintains a private practice in marriage and family therapy.

Newell and his wife, Tamara, are active members of Wilshire Church of Christ in Oklahoma City where Ryan currently serves as an elder. They have raised two children: Brent Newell and Amber Rose. Both children are 2007 graduates – Brent from Cascade College in Portland, Ore., and Amber from Oklahoma Christian.
