Goodyear, Ariz. - No. 20 Women's golf played its second tournament of the week, this time in Goodyear, Arizona, at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic. And they're returning with an individual title for Sofia Benavides and a fourth-place team finish.
Â
Benavides took first place with a great final round, shooting 69 (-3) to put her at -1 for the tournament. The title didn't come without some drama as Benavides was one to four shots ahead of ten field members, who still had nine holes to play when she finished. But none of them could top her score, and she took the title. Sofia had nine birdies and 21 pars during her 36 holes.
Â
Wilma Merenmies finished T21, shooting a 75 (+3) in both rounds. Merenmies finished in the top ten for pars with 20.
Â
Alex Bennett finished T40 shooting a total score of 153 (+9) over her two rounds.
Haley Blevins finished right behind her at 10-over, with a low-round in round two of 76. Bennett had the lone eagle for the Eagles, which came on the 9th hole, a par-5 at 515 yards.
Â
Sarah Sherrard wrapped up the Eagles' top five finishing T65 with a final score of 165 (+13). Sherrard tied with Merenmies with 20 pars over her two rounds.
Â
Oklahoma Christian, as a team, tied for fourth place with a two-day total of 600 (+24). OC tied for the second-best score on par threes and had the third most pars with 92.
