Best season in the NCAA era wraps up in Lone Star Conference Championship

San Antonio, Texas - Oklahoma Christian advanced to the championship of the Lone Star Conference Championship, where they took on the defending LSC champs, #6-seed Midwestern State.

The championship match was two teams on great runs, as Midwestern State was the last team to make it in, and OC was continuing its great season with two great finishes earlier in the tournament.

The Eagles dominated the Mustangs in the first half, controlling possession and the shot count, and they had three shots on the goal in the final 10 minutes. The back line of the defense also had a big play in the last minute of the first half, clearing a ball destined for the goal with a header.

The Mustangs, after not having many good looks in the first half, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute. OC fought until the end, getting three more looks and overall out shot Midwestern State 10-8. But after bringing the entire team into the box on a free kick in the 88th minute, MSU cleared the free kick, countered, and scored again to seal the match with a 2-0 victory.

"Incredibly proud of the guys and of where we are as a team right now, turning the program around and making history this season." head coach Mitchell Sowerby said after the match. "We know we fell short, but we will be back and be in this conference tournament for many years to come."

If by short coach Mitchell Sowerby means going from one win to eleven (most wins in DII era), having two goal scorers break the school's NCAA era record for goals in a season with Danny Gutierrez and Joep Claassen each scoring seven times, and making the conference tournament for the first time in the DII era, then there has never been a better time to be an Eagle.
