Eagles stun Division II power Midwestern State

OKLAHOMA CITY (March 6, 2021) – A big blast from D'Waylan McIntosh and some stellar goalkeeping by Anthony Trabichet on Saturday afternoon lifted Oklahoma Christian to its biggest win in half a decade.

McIntosh scored on a shot from outside the penalty box in the 70th minute to give the Eagles the lead and Trabichet made it stand up with a 10-save performance as OC upset longtime NCAA Division II power Midwestern State (Texas) 2-1 at the Eagle Soccer Field.

OC (1-2, 1-2 Lone Star Conference) rallied from an early deficit against Midwestern State (2-1, 1-1) to post its first win over the Mustangs in 18 tries, since the two programs first began playing each other as NAIA members in 1988.

Midwestern State usually is a fixture in the Division II rankings and isn't ranked this season only because there are no coaches' polls being produced this spring. The Mustangs won the Lone Star Conference title in fall 2019 and advanced to the second round of the Division II tournament.

The last time OC beat such a highly regarded foe was on Sept. 19, 2015, when the Eagles downed Northeastern State – then coming off an appearance in the 2014 NCAA tournament and receiving votes in the national poll – by a 1-0 count.

"Today was a great effort from the whole team," OC coach David Scott said. "We were a little shorthanded with injuries and the guys came together and fought to grind out the result. I'm very proud of the focus and determination we had today. We gave up a goal in the first half but responded well and leveled things up before halftime."

Midwestern State – which outshot the Eagles 22-4 – took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Trabichet tackled Midwestern State's Trevor Amman in the penalty box, but the loose ball was collected by Carlos Flores, who dribbled and dished to Julian Barajas, who then scored.

It didn't take long for OC to equalize. In the 29th minute, Carlos Trapero sent a looping pass over the Mustangs' defense to Ian Arendse, who chested the ball to control it, then beat both a defender and Midwestern State goalkeeper Taylor Lampe. It was the Eagles' first goal this season. Linas Ovcinikovas also received an assist on the goal.

McIntosh, a junior from Broken Arrow, took a pass from Arendse in the 70th minute and beat three defenders before firing a shot from outside the penalty box into the upper right corner of the goal, which Lampe had no chance to deflect, giving the Eagles the lead. It was McIntosh's fourth career goal.

From there, Trabichet – who posted his seventh career double-digit saves performance – and the Eagles' defensive back line kept the Mustangs from evening the match. Midwestern State's last threat came in the final minute, when Trabichet saved a shot by Yogi Vargas. It was one of five saves the junior goalkeeper from Thonon-les-Bains, France, made in the final 10 minutes.

"After we took the lead in the second half, they really started to press the game but the guys stayed organized and defended well," Scott said. "MSU is a very good team and I'm so happy for our guys to have come out and worked so hard and gotten the win today."

Lampe finished with two saves for the Mustangs.

OC will return to action Tuesday, when the Eagles are scheduled to visit LSC rival Texas A&M International. The Eagles' next home game will be next Saturday against St. Mary's (Texas).
