Eagles push WT in season finale before falling

OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 3, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian took an early lead, but No. 22 West Texas A&M rallied for a 2-1 win over the Eagles on a damp, chilly Wednesday night in OC's season finale at the Eagle Soccer Field.

For the second time this season, OC (1-11-3, 0-7-1 Lone Star Conference) held its own for most of the way with mighty West Texas A&M (12-3, 6-2) before falling on a late goal. The Buffaloes only outshot OC 15-12 and the Eagles' counterattack provided a handful of good scoring opportunities.

OC took advantage of one of them. In the seventh minute, Alejandro Colom delivered a picture-perfect cross from the right side of the field to senior Carlos Trapero, who had entered the game just moments earlier after an injury forced an OC starter off the pitch. Trapero beat West Texas A&M goalkeeper Tom Miles to put the Eagles ahead.

The Buffaloes equalized in the 33rd minute, with Denis Herrera assisting on a goal by Chris Palomino. West Texas A&M didn't take the lead until the 73rd minutes, when Anthony Perea's cross from the right side found a charging Ricardo Castillo, who scored.

The Eagles pushed for an equalizer the rest of the way but one never came.

In his final start for the Eagles, goalkeeper Anthony Trabichet made two saves in 82 minutes before exiting, with another departing goalkeeper, Dalton Tunstall, playing eight minutes and making a save in his first collegiate appearance. Miles made five saves for West Texas A&M.

Trabichet and Tunstall were among nine OC seniors honored before the game, a list that also included Luke Humphrey, Pedro Ribeira, Trapero, Bjarne Deraeve, Igbinosa Isere, Thomas van der Meulen and Jesus Garcia.

The loss ended coach Mitchell Sowerby's first season at the OC helm.
