AMARILLO, Texas (Oct. 5, 2021) – Freshman
Sofia Benavides Herberth posted the lowest round of her young collegiate career to lead No. 24-ranked Oklahoma Christian to a fifth-place finish among 13 teams in the West Texas A&M Fall Invitational, which ended Tuesday at Tascosa Country Club.
OC posted a team score of 302 in the final round to finish with a two-day score of 602. No. 14-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce won with a score of 585, three shots better than tournament host and No. 17 West Texas A&M.
Benavides Herberth, from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, had two birdies en route to a 1-over-par 72 on the 5,865-yard course, moving her up the leaderboard into a tie for 25th at 152 in the 70-woman field. Also in a tie for 25th was fellow freshman
Sarah Sherrard of Moore, Okla., who fired her second straight 76.
The Eagles' top finisher in the tournament was sophomore
Wilma Merenmies of Raasepori, Finland, who tied for 12th at 149 after shooting a 77 on Tuesday. One shot back was freshman
Haley Blevins of Edmond, who also shot a 77 and tied for 17th.
OC's fifth player was junior
Alexandria Bennett of Plano, Texas, who also shot 77 and tied for 38th at 156.
West Texas A&M's Alyssa Campbell won the tournament at 141 (1-under).
The Eagles will stay in Oklahoma next week, competing in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate, hosted by Cameron at Lawton Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
