TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 25, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian bounced between seventh and 16th place on Monday on the opening day of the Tulsa Cup women's golf tournament, ending the day in a tie for 12th when play in the second round at MeadowBrook Country Club was suspended due to darkness.
OC posted a first-round score of 320 and was tied for 11th with St. Mary's (Texas) after the round. Only two OC players,
Haley Blevins and
Sofia Benavides Herberth, finished the second round, with others still having between one and three holes to finish.
The Eagles' player highest on the leaderboard was sophomore
Wilma Merenmies of Raasepori, Finland, who shot a 10-over-par 82 in the first round and was 2-over through 15 holes in the second round when play was halted. At 12-over, she was tied for 32nd in the 94-woman field.
A shot back, tied for 37th, was OC junior
Alexandria Bennett of Plano, Texas. Bennett posted an 80 on the 5,966-yard course in the first round and was 5-over through 15 holes.
Blevins, a freshman from Edmond, had OC's top score in the first round, a 77, and shot an 82 in the second round to put her at 15-over 159, tied for 53rd. Freshman
Sarah Sherrard of Moore was at 19-over, tied for 64th. She shot a first-round 81 and was 10-over in the second round with one hole remaining.
Benavides Herberth, a freshman from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, had an 88 in the first round before improving to a 79 in the second round. She was at 23-over 167.
In the 19-team race, OC was at 56-over, tied with Union (Tenn.). Tournament host Rogers State held the lead at 19-over. Individually, Gam Songprasert of West Texas A&M and Megan Brown of Southwestern Oklahoma State were atop the field at 3-over.
The second round will resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday, with the third round set to start about 10 a.m.
