OKLAHOMA CITY (March 12, 2020) – Based on the latest developments and the continued spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Lone Star Conference announced on Thursday the suspension of regular-season competition for teams in all sports, effective Friday until March 30.
Oklahoma Christian also has decided that none of its club sports teams – including those participating in bowling and Ultimate – will compete during that time frame, OC Athletic Director
David Lynn said.
"The health and safety of our student-athletes is our top priority and along with the conference, we feel this is a necessary step during this time of uncertainty," Lynn said.
Earlier Thursday, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the organization's Board of Governors cancelled all remaining winter and spring NCAA championship events. That decision will affect OC's softball, baseball, men's and women's golf and men's and women's outdoor track and field teams.
"This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities," the NCAA said in a statement.
In addition, the U.S. Bowling Congress – which governs collegiate bowling's postseason – indefinitely postponed its sectional tournaments for the Intercollegiate Singles Championship and Intercollegiate Team Championship. OC's teams were scheduled to begin play in those events on Friday.
"USBC made this decision after reviewing the actions of universities and national governing bodies to postpone or cancel collegiate events due to COVID-19 safety concerns," the organization said. "USBC will continue to monitor conditions in the coming weeks and consider options for rescheduling the intercollegiate events."
