WACO, Texas (June 12, 2019) – The final Heartland Conference Academic Honor Roll, released Wednesday, included 189 student-athletes, the second-highest total of any league school.
The league announced its spring Honor Roll on Wednesday. OC had the highest number of honorees in women's basketball (15), women's golf (eight) and most among nonconference sports (63). OC had 14 more student-athletes make the honor roll this spring than during the fall semester.
"It always is encouraging to see the high number of student-athletes we have on the Heartland Honor Roll," OC Athletic Director
David Lynn said. "It's a tangible sign of the effort they make to be outstanding in the classroom."
The Honor Roll is divided into two categories. To qualify for the President's Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have recorded a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the semester, while those who post a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 receive recognition on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
OC had 105 student-athletes (51 men, 54 women) make the President's list, while 84 others (53 men, 31 women) made the Commissioner's list. Men's swimming had the most players honored with 25, with baseball close behind with 24 and men's soccer with 20. Women's golf placed eight of its nine team members on the Honor Roll (88.9 percent), while women's basketball had 15 of 18 (83.3 percent).
Two OC student-athletes made the list twice –
Lexi Lane and
Natalie Thomas, who compete on both the women's soccer and track and field teams.
This is the third academic year in which the Heartland has allowed student-athletes from sports not sponsored by the conference to receive recognition on the honor roll, which means members of OC's track and field and swimming teams are among those honored, even though they compete in separate conferences.
Across the Heartland, 1,251 student-athletes received recognition on one of the lists. St. Edward's (Texas) had 193, followed by OC. During the last four academic years over 10,000 student-athletes have been named to the Heartland Conference Honor Rolls.
The Heartland Conference will cease operations at the end of June, with seven of its members – including OC – set to join the Lone Star Conference.
