INDIANAPOLIS (April 18, 2019) – A runner-up finish in the Heartland Conference Championship likely locked up a NCAA Division II postseason berth for Oklahoma Christian's women's golf team.
The Eagles stayed at No. 6 in the West Super Region rankings released Thursday, and the top 12 teams in the super region will qualify for the West Super Regional, set for May 6-8 at Amarillo Country Club in Amarillo, Texas.
OC won't play in another tournament before the Super Regional field is announced by the NCAA on April 29.
OC last qualified as a team for the Super Regional in 2016, the program's first season of eligibility in Division II. The past two seasons, the Eagles have had individuals qualify for the tournament –
Abigail Rigsby and
Kate Goodwin in 2017 and Goodwin again in 2018. Goodwin went on to win the Super Regional individual title.
The top four team finishers at the Super Regional and top three individuals not on one of those teams will advance to the NCAA Division II Championship, set for May 15-18 at PGA National Resort's Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
In 2018-19, OC has won three tournaments – the Northeastern State Women's Classic at Cherokee Springs Golf Club in Tahlequah, the Midwestern State Invitational at Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls, Texas, and the Hillcat Classic at Bailey Ranch Golf Club in Owasso.
Earlier this week, OC finished behind only Dallas Baptist (Texas), the region's top-ranked team, in the Heartland tournament at Slick Rock Golf Course in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
Following Dallas Baptist in the current Super Region rankings were California State-San Marcos, West Texas A&M, St. Mary's (Texas) and Academy of Art (Calif.), the same top five as last week. After OC came St. Edward's (Texas), Sonoma State (Calif.), Texas A&M-Commerce, California State-Monterey Bay, Midwestern State (Texas) and Colorado State-Pueblo – also the same order as last week.
Just outside the cut line for a regional spot were No. 13 Rogers State and No. 14 Concordia (Ore.). As with the rest of the teams in the rankings, both held their positions from last week.
