INDIANAPOLIS (April 11, 2019) – Oklahoma Christian dropped one spot to No. 6 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region women's golf rankings, released Thursday.
Competing with only four players, the Eagles finished fifth among 23 teams last Thursday and Friday in the Mustang Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz., then placed sixth among 17 teams in the West Texas Desert Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon in Tucscon, Ariz.
OC junior
Abigail Rigsby won the individual title in the Mustang Invitational, her third career collegiate win.
The top 12 teams in the final Super Region rankings, which will come out April 29, will earn a spot in the West Super Regional, set for May 6-8 at Amarillo Country Club in Amarillo, Texas. Six individual spots, for players on teams that don't qualify for the Super Regional, also will be available.
OC last qualified as a team for the Super Regional in 2016, the program's first season of eligibility in Division II. The past two seasons, the Eagles have had individuals qualify for the tournament – Rigsby and
Kate Goodwin in 2017 and Goodwin again in 2018. Goodwin went on to win the Super Regional individual title.
The top three team finishers at the Super Regional and top three individuals not on one of those teams will advance to the NCAA Division II Championship, set for May 15-18 at PGA National Resort's Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
In 2018-19, OC has won three tournaments – the Northeastern State Women's Classic at Cherokee Springs Golf Club in Tahlequah, the Midwestern State Invitational at Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls, Texas, and the Hillcat Classic at Bailey Ranch Golf Club in Owasso.
Leading the West Super Region rankings was Dallas Baptist (Texas), with California State-San Marcos and West Texas A&M switching places from a week earlier at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. St. Mary's (Texas) stayed at No. 4, with Academy of Art (Calif.) – which finished ahead of OC in Tucson – moving up one spot to fifth, ahead of the Eagles.
St. Edward's (Texas), Sonoma State (Calif.) and Texas A&M-Commerce all held their positions at seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. California State-Monterey Bay moved up three spots to No. 10, with Midwestern State (Texas) dropped one spot to No. 11. Colorado State-Pueblo debuted at No. 12.
Just outside the cut line for a regional spot were No. 13 Rogers State (down two spots) and Concordia (Ore.), which held at No. 14. Tarleton State (Texas) fell from No. 12 out of the rankings.
The Eagles have one more tournament before the final regional rankings are released, the Heartland Conference Championship, which will be played Sunday through Tuesday at Slick Rock Golf Course in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. Among the teams in the field will be Dallas Baptist, St. Mary's, St. Edward's and Rogers State.
