CORAL GABLES, Fla. (March 15, 2019) – A win to open its spring season didn't keep Oklahoma Christian from falling one spot to No. 18 in the latest Women's Golf Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll, released Friday.
OC won by 16 shots in the Midwestern State Invitational, which ended Tuesday at Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The Eagles began the fall season among "others receiving votes" in the poll and made their debut in the Oct. 1 poll at No. 21 before jumping in the Oct. 22 poll to No. 15, which was the program's highest national ranking in the Division II era. OC slipped to No. 17 in the final fall-season poll on Nov. 19, then held there in the most recent poll before Friday, released Feb. 22.
OC was one of four Heartland Conference teams in the poll, joining No. 1 Dallas Baptist (Texas), No. 15 St. Mary's (Texas) and No. 23 St. Edward's (Texas). Another Heartland squad, Rogers State, received votes but didn't crack the top 25.
In addition to OC, two other Oklahoma Division II schools also were ranked – No. 19 Southwestern Oklahoma State and No. 20 Northeastern State.
Among West Super Region teams, OC was sixth behind Dallas Baptist, No. 5 West Texas A&M, No. 7 California State-San Marcos, St. Mary's and No. 17 Academy of Art (Calif.).
In April, the top 12 teams in the NCAA Division II West Super Region rankings – a separate list from the coaches' poll – will advance to the Super Regional tournament and the top three teams from that tournament will advance to the NCAA Division II Championship. OC hasn't qualified for the Super Regional since 2016.
The current top five in the coaches' poll consisted of Dallas Baptist, Barry (Fla.), Nova Southeastern (Fla.), Indianapolis (Ind.) and West Texas A&M. Arkansas Tech was sixth, followed by Cal State-San Marcos, Lynn (Fla.) and Rollins (Fla.) tied for eighth and Florida Tech.
OC will play Monday and Tuesday in Rogers State's Hillcat Classic at Bailey Ranch Golf Club in Owasso.
