EDMOND, Okla. (Nov. 9, 2019) – St. Edward's (Texas) has been one of the Lone Star Conference's hottest soccer teams in league play, but Oklahoma Christian matched the Hilltoppers most of the way Saturday before a late goal by the visitors allowed them to escape.
OCs
Carlos Trapero scored a goal and assisted on another by
Ian Arendse in the 69th minute, but Fabian Pallares answered in the 70th minute to give St. Edward's a 3-2 win on the artificial turf at Edmond Santa Fe High School's Wolves Stadium. The game – the last for the Eagles in the 2019 season – was moved due to unplayable field conditions on OC's home field.
St. Edward's (7-7-3, 6-2-2 LSC) finished fourth in the regular-season league standings, but the Eagles outshot St. Edward's 15-14 and the Hilltoppers trailed OC (5-11, 2-8) after Trapero scored in the 13th minute. He took the ball about 50 yards from the goal on the right side, dribbled three or four times and beat St. Edward's goalkeeper Kellen Guillon one-on-one to put the Eagles ahead.
Later in the first half, a hard shot by a St. Edward's player hit an OC player's arm and the Hilltoppers were awarded a penalty kick as a result. OC goalkeeper
Anthony Trabichet saved Parker Fyfe's initial effort, but Fyfe collected the rebound and scored in the 25th minute to tie the game.
The Hilltoppers went ahead 2-1 in the 54th minute, when Grant Vernon crossed the ball from the left side and George Murray volleyed it into the goal from about 10 yards out.
Then it was OC's turn to tie the game. Guillon saved a shot by
Thomas van der Meulen, but the ball caromed to Trapero on the right side and he crossed it to Arendse, who beat Guillon from 10 yards out in the 69th minute.
But about a minute later, Pallares scored what proved to be the game-winner for St. Edward's, eluding both an OC defender and Trabichet, who had come off his line to try and knock the ball away, and shooting right-to-left into an empty net.
The Eagles' best chance to tie the game after that came in the 85th minute, when Guillon fisted a free kick by
Bjarne Deraeve from about 30 yards out over the crossbar. It was the last of Guillon's six saves. Trabichet finished with three saves for the Eagles.
