OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 23, 2018) – For the second time this soccer season, Oklahoma Christian gave a nationally ranked foe all it wanted on Sunday afternoon, and this time, the Eagles earned a result.
Matheus Mantovani converted a game-tying penalty kick for OC in the 74th minute and the Eagles held on for a 1-1 draw with No. 11 St. Mary's (Texas) at Putnam City Stadium. The game originally was scheduled for Saturday, but was delayed and moved to the artificial turf field at Putnam City due to unplayable field conditions at OC due to recent rain.
OC (3-4-1, 1-2-1 Heartland Conference) played Heartland South Division-leading St. Mary's (4-1-2, 2-1-1) on even terms for most of the match, as evidenced by the fact both teams had 14 shots.
The Rattlers hit the post with one of theirs, by Ollie Write, in the 36th minute, but OC's defense otherwise held strong until the 62nd minute. That's when the Rattlers' All-South Central Region forward, Pato Botello Faz, headed in a free kick by Carlos Blasco. It was the league-leading seventh goal of the season for Botello Faz.
In the 71st minute, Zoarab Tsopourachvili just missed tying the game for OC when his bicycle-kick attempt sailed just high. But in the 74th minute, a St. Mary's defender was called for a handball in the penalty box, giving the Eagles a penalty kick, and Mantovani converted for his team-high fourth goal of the season. He has converted both of his penalty kicks in 2018.
In overtime, OC was unable to convert on a couple of good scoring chances by
Diego Vazquez and Tsopourachvili, while St. Mary's nearly won the game when a shot by Nenad Markovic hit the post in the 100th minute. OC goalkeeper
Anthony Trabichet made the last of his three saves in the final minute on a header shot by Botello Faz to preserve the tie. Trabichet leads the Heartland with 52 saves this season.
St. Mary's goalkeeper Gerard Roebuck made four saves. The Rattlers went 0-1-1 on the week, losing at No. 1-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) 3-1 on Thursday before tying the Eagles.
The Eagles will go on the road for their next three games – Thursday at Lubbock Christian (Texas), Saturday at Texas-Permian Basin and Oct. 4 at Dallas Baptist (Texas).
