West Texas A&M jumps on Eagles early, pulls away

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 11, 2018) – West Texas A&M jumped on Oklahoma Christian for three goals in the first 30 minutes and pulled away for a 5-0 win on Thursday night on a soggy Eagle Soccer Field.

Reece Schattle had a hat trick and added an assist for West Texas A&M (9-2-2, 6-2-1 Heartland Conference), which is undefeated this season against teams not named Lubbock Christian (Texas).

With the loss, OC (6-6-1, 4-4-1) stayed at 13 standings points, falling into a tie for sixth in the Heartland with St. Edward's (Texas). The top six teams will qualify for the league's postseason tournament. The Eagles' final home game – on Saturday against Eastern New Mexico, which is in eighth with 11 points – figures to be critical in the race for a postseason spot.

The Buffaloes outshot OC 32-7, including 22-2 in the first half, when they played at a high level, particularly on offense. Schattle scored in the 13th and 24th minutes and assisted on a goal by Julio Vargas in the 30th minute.

Stefan Andjelic scored in the 51st minute and Schattle completed his hat trick in the 60th minute. OC played a man up after West Texas A&M's Julio Hernandez received a straight red card in the 79th minute.

OC's top player was Diego Vazquez, who had five of the Eagles' seven shots. Four were on goal and a fifth caromed off the left post in the 50th minute.

Goalkeeper Alexander Vencel made four saves for West Texas A&M, while OC freshman Anthony Trabichet had 11, matching his career high. Freshman Daniel Moos made his season debut in goal for OC, playing the final 14 minutes, but made no saves.

OC's game against Eastern New Mexico will begin at 1 p.m. After the game will be a ceremony honoring the Eagles' four seniors – Vanja Hodovic, Matheus Mantovani, Ignacio Barboza and Zourab Tsopourachvili.
