Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 7, 2017) – Feeling upbeat about their first 2-0 start to a season since 2013, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles had their balloon popped by a longtime rival on Thursday.
Oklahoma Baptist took advantage of a pair of defensive errors to score two first-half goals and milked that advantage the rest of the way for a 2-1 win over OC at the Eagle Soccer Field.
OC (2-1) outshot the Bison (1-0) by a 12-11 count and controlled the possession for a majority of the game, but never broke through OBU's defensive back line. The Eagles' only goal came in the 20th minute, on a blast from outside the penalty box by
Jaiden van der Heijden, off an assist by
Sebastian Capkovic.
"It was a frustrating game," OC coach
David Scott. "We didn't play poor. It was the just the two mistakes we made and we just couldn't play in the final third."
In a chippy game in which referee David Nunes issued nine yellow cards – five to OC, four to OBU – it was the Bison who took an early lead. In the 14th minute, a miscommunication between OC defenders meant a cross into the penalty box by OBU's Thiago Dos Santos didn't get cleared, and Martin Romero tapped in the loose ball to put the Bison ahead.
Less than six minutes later, van der Heijden equalized for the Eagles, with his screaming bender from 25 yards out eluding OBU goalkeeper Parker Lawter. But in the 43rd minute, Dos Santos caught the OC defense off guard again and scored on his own long blast, beating goalkeeper
Gianluca Marchetti.
Neither team had an outstanding scoring chance in the second half, although OC outshot OBU 7-5.
Marchetti finished with five saves for OC, while Lawter had three for the Bison.
The loss kept OC from sweeping its three season-opening games against Great American Conference opponents, as the Eagles already had posted road wins at Southern Nazarene and Harding (Ark.).
OC's final 14 games will be against Heartland Conference foes, starting next Thursday at Eastern New Mexico.
