Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. (Oct. 26, 2017) – Oklahoma Christian came inches from scoring on three different occasions, but those attempts all banged off the post and crossbar, leaving the Eagles on the wrong end of a 3-0 score at Rogers State on Thursday night at Soldier Field.
Rogers State (7-7-3, 4-5-3 Heartland Conference) picked up two goals from Jake Simpson and another from Callum Hubble en route to the win over OC (3-11-2, 1-10-2). But despite the lopsided score, the Eagles were outshot only 13-8 and could well have come away with a much better result had they had a little luck.
With a north wind gusting to 30 mph at its back, OC trailed only 1-0 in the 61st minute when goalkeeper
Gary Goldsboro Jr. launched a punt that carried well past midfield. The soccer ball bounced twice – going over the head of Rogers State goalkeeper Cody Gammill – before hitting the post at the other end. Goldsboro wasn't credited with a shot, but if the ball had bounced a few inches to the left, the game would have been tied.
Simpson, who gave the Hillcats the lead in the 20th minute, made it 2-0 in the 69th minute, scoring off the rebound after Goldsboro had saved a shot by Jaxon Pitt. But the Eagles nearly cut into the lead in the 75th minute, when
Matheus Mantovani's free kick from about 25 yards out bounded off the crossbar.
Less than two minutes later, Hubble essentially sealed the win for Rogers State. The Eagles were denied yet again by the crossbar in the 87th minute, on a free kick by
Jeremy Martinez.
Goldsboro, making his third straight start, finished with three saves, as did Gammill.
OC will wrap up its season on Saturday at noon, hosting No. 3-ranked Midwestern State (Texas). Six OC seniors will be honored before the game –
Anthony Buchanan,
Tyler Buchanan,
Nijee Cooper,
Clay Collier,
Braydan Castrop and
Cody McLemore.
