Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 14, 2017) – Oklahoma Christian went toe-to-toe with one of NCAA Division II's best soccer teams on Saturday night and came agonizingly close to what would be a major breakthrough.
But No. 3-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) picked up a second-half goal from Scott Doney and rode it the rest of the way to hold off OC 1-0 at Stang Park. Midwestern State (12-0-2, 8-0-2 Heartland Conference) remained undefeated and has 26 standings points, the most in the league.
The Mustangs outshot OC (3-8-2, 1-7-2) by an 11-2 count, but OC held them without a shot for the first 27 minutes and OC goalkeeper
Gianluca Marchetti didn't have to make a save until the 41st minute as the Eagles' defense held strong.
But Midwestern State broke through in the 56th minute. Sebastian Venegas sent a cross into the box that Marchetti caught but dropped, and Scott Doney scored to put the Mustangs ahead.
OC's shots came in the 66th minute, when
Anthony Buchanan fired high, and the 81st minute, when
Cole Helterbrand's attempt slid wide right.
Marchetti finished with three saves for the Eagles, while Midwestern State goalkeeper Richard Goss was not credited with a save.
OC will host Dallas Baptist (Texas) on Thursday and will play three of its final four games of the season at home.
