WEST PYMBLE, Australia (Nov. 10, 2016) – Felicity Wittenberg, a fast-improving Australian golfer who comes from an athletic family, has signed a letter of intent to play collegiately at Oklahoma Christian, OC coach
Greg Lynn said Thursday.
Wittenberg's brother, Anthony, is a freshman soccer player at OC and her parents, Corey and Mary Barbara, played college tennis at Texas Christian. Corey Wittenberg earned All-America honors in that sport in 1983 and also is an accomplished golfer.
"Felicity has tremendous potential and comes from a very athletic family with lots of exceptional golf history," Lynn said. "She comes with a great and powerful golf swing and a very strong work ethic. She has improved so fast, it's unlimited how good she could be."
How fast has the improvement been? In March 2013, shortly after seriously taking up the game, her handicap was at 45.4 One year later, it had dropped to 8.3 and it's continued dropping ever since.
In 2015, she placed 17th in the New South Wales All Schools Golf Championships, and she received All State honors in golf in both 2015 and 2016. Wittenberg also was the Avondale Golf Club's Nett Junior Champion in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
She also has enjoyed success in other sports including track and field, cross country and netball.
Wittenberg will become the third Australian to play for OC's women's golf program, which is currently in its sixth season of existence. The previous two were Catherine Odgers and
India Matthews. Odgers was a National Christian College Athletic Association All-America honoree in 2012 and 2014, while Matthews received All-Heartland Conference honors in 2014.
