OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 4, 2008) – Oklahoma Christian University opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a pair of overtime games against John Brown (Ark.) Saturday.
The Eagles and Golden Eagles battled to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime while JBU's women notched a 1-0 victory in extra time.
In the men's game, it looked like the Eagles might win their conference opener when Trey Boykin scored off a rebound of a Cristian Fernandes shot in the 88th minute.
But John Brown answered with 40 seconds to play in regulation when Adrian Jasso got behind the OC defense and beat goalkeeper Bryan Cochrum into the bottom right corner of the net.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first overtime, but Pablo Hernandez's header went wide right and JBU's Nick Robbins sent a shot over the crossbar.
In the second overtime, Boykin just missed high from out front, then Watson and Cochrum turned away shots by Andy Lopez and Juan Iraola, respectively, to close out the tie game.
Boykin paced Oklahoma Christian with five shots, including four on goal, while Jasso led the Golden Eagles with six shots (three on goal). Overall, JBU outshot the Eagles 19-16. Cochrum had 10 saves for the Eagles while Watson had nine for JBU.
OC moved to 3-3-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play while JBU moved to 5-3-1 and 1-1-1.
In the nightcap, the Lady Eagles and JBU played an even first 90 minutes, with neither team scoring a goal in regulation.
The Lady Eagles came close to scoring on several occasions in regulation. Emma Cole, Heather Spencer and Taylor Cofer all had second-half shots on goal that were turned away by JBU goalkeeper Megan Rouse.
John Brown took advantage of the opportunity in the 97th minute of the first overtime when Camille Malkiewicz netted the game-winning goal, just barely beating Lady Eagle goalkeeper Lisa Jorgensen.
OC was led by Cole, who registered three shots on goal. The Lady Eagles posted 15 shots overall to JBU's four.
The Lady Eagles fell to 4-4-1 and 0-1 in SAC play while JBU advanced to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in conference.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles host Rogers State (Okla.) on Tuesday in another key Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader. The women's game kicks off at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7 p.m.
