BETHANY, Okla. (Sept. 12, 2008) – For the second straight game, the Oklahoma Christian University men's soccer team tallied a 1-1, double-overtime draw. The Eagles tied Bellevue (Neb.) on Friday night in a neutral-site game at Southern Nazarene's Wanda Rhodes Soccer Complex.
Oklahoma Christian is now 1-0-2 on the 2008 season. The Eagles square off with William Jewell (Mo.) tomorrow at 5 p.m. as the nightcap of a women's-men's doubleheader. The Lady Eagles play 12th-ranked William Jewell at 3 p.m.
Bellevue (3-2-1) scored first in Friday's contest when Adam Hooi booted home a corner-kick pass from Jamie McCormack just 2:49 into the action to make it 1-0.
The Eagles responded 19 minutes later when the team's leading scorer, Cristian Fernandes, scored in traffic with help from Ryan Frampton to lock the game at 1-1. The goal was the junior forward's third of the year.
But scoring would come at a premium that point on. The draw held until halftime and continued into a defensive-slowed second half. The second period saw eight Bellevue shots to five OC offerings, with none resulting in goals.
The Eagles fired four shots on goal in the final overtime period, but Bellevue's Sebastian Navaez managed to save each shot.
OC's Bryan Cochrum, fresh of being named Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, had eight saves in the game and five after intermission.
The final shot count was nearly even, with the Bruins edging the Eagles 19 to 17.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles games against William Jewell will also be played in Bethany. The teams' home openers are Sept. 19 against Texas College.
