Lady Eagles beat OBU; Eagles tie

The undefeated Oklahoma Christian Lady Eagles are now 6-0 after defeating Oklahoma Baptist University 2-1 in overtime here Tuesday (Sept. 19).

In men's action, the Eagles and the Bison battled to a 1-1 stalemate through double overtime.

A "flick on" by Lady Eagle freshman Heather Spencer proved to be the game winner in the women's contest. Another freshman, Kelly Hlubek, served up a long ball from 35 yards out and Spencer, a former Edmond Memorial all-stater, headed the ball backward from in front of the goal, over the goalkeeper's arms for the score.

OC is now 3-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and is tied with Oklahoma City for the league's top spot.

Coach Sean O'Connor's Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the opening seconds of the second half. Junior Cassie Tyler booted a free kick from 25 yards out and junior Kristin Brown scored after a deflection by the OBU goalie.  It was Brown's ninth goal of the season.

With 8:28 left in regulation, OBU's Menjung Zang scored for the Bison. Cara Zalenski passed from the left side of the net and Zang headed the ball back into the net from the far pole to send it into overtime.

"This win really feels good," O'Connor said. "Our girls showed a lot of character in the second half and it is an outstanding win for them."

In the men's game, OC took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of play on a goal by Cristian Fernandes. Freshman Tyler Brady took a corner kick for the Eagles, driving the ball across the frame. Freshman Ryan Frampton headed the ball back to Fernandes who headed the ball into the net for the score.

The Eagles' lead held up until midway in the second half when OBU forward Thiago Libertorio scored from in front of the goal after receiving a pass from teammate Manuel Ojalvo. Libertorio made a quick turn and put the ball into the net for the score.

OC was unable to connect on several scoring opportunities in the final period and saw the game forced into overtime. In the first overtime, OC had a pair of close-in shots that were saved by OBU goalkeeper Cristiano Costa.

The Eagles are 5-1-1 and 1-1-1 in SAC play.
