OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 20, 2009) – Both Oklahoma Christian's women's and men's soccer teams suffered losses from Southern Nazarene University on Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles fell 2-0 with the men losing 1-0 in the last minute of the game.
The Lady Eagles started the game with a strong head wind making forward progress more difficult than usual. Despite the conditions, the OC women drove to the goal various times but were unable to score.
Midway through the half, Southern Nazarene's Jackie Acevedo found the net off Bruna Da Cas' assist to put the Lady Eagles down 0-1.
At the start of the second half, SNU broke past the OC defense early and came away with a second goal to up the score to 0-2. SNU's Rachel Eguren scored the goal from a Stephanie Royse assist.
The OC women fought hard in retaliation with numerous shots on goal throughout the remainder of the game. Unable to find the net, the Lady Eagles suffered their fourth loss of the season to the Crimson Storm women leaving them 8-4-2 on the season.
In the men's game, the Eagles took quickly to the ball and put tough pressure on Southern Nazarene's defense with various attempts at goal. Throughout the entire half, both teams went back and forth across the field in a well-matched battle.
The second half saw the same back and forth game play for the majority of the period. Going against the brutal wind, the Eagles were unable to find the goal and the OC defense kept the Crimson Storm scoreless until the last minute of the game. SNU's Thierry Gakire scored off of a free kick opportunity with only 40 seconds remaining in the game.
Gakire's goal won the competition for the Crimson Storm and left the OC men with only their third loss this year and an 8-3-1 record for the season.
The OC women and men both head to the road to play Rogers State for their next games on Friday. The women's game begins at 5:00 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7:00 p.m.
