Lady Eagles, Eagles defeat WBU

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 7, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian women's and men's soccer teams each earned much needed wins Thursday night as the women played to a 4-1 victory and the men captured their first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout.

The Lady Eagles took to the field ready to score as their offense found momentum and used it as they put up 21 shots against the Wayland Baptist women. OC had no problem controlling the ball and took to an early advantage when Alysha Palacio took an assist on the run from Hope Heinan and put the ball past the keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Not the long after, however, the Pioneer women responded in similar fashion with a goal to tie the game up at 1-1. Despite several more shots at the Wayland goal, the Lady Eagles did not get back on the board till just six minutes remained in the first half.

Angela Pete put the Lady Eagles up to a 2-1 lead after connecting on an assist from India Farr. Seconds before the period ended, OC's Sarena Underwood fired the ball past the Wayland keeper to put the Lady Eagles up 3-1 heading into halftime.

The Lady Eagles continued to control the game during the second period and extended their lead early on with a second goal from Underwood. Underwood took an assist from Taylor Cofer before netting the Lady Eagles' fourth goal for a 4-1 advantage.

OC held the Pioneer women to only four shots during the period and no goals as they claimed their second victory of the season. The win improves the Lady Eagles to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2 for conference play.

In the men's game the Eagles cooperated well during the first half as they tore through the WBU defense putting up eight shots and scoring two goals during the first period.

Tommy Guernsey netted the first goal early on for the Eagles after heading in an assist from Brandon Pascoe to put OC ahead at 1-0. As the Eagles continued to attack the Wayland goal, the OC men did not find the back of the net again until Pascoe finished off a cross from Don Towner with 10 minutes left to play to take a 2-0 lead before the half.

Minutes into the second period, Tyler Brady blasted an outside shot past the keeper to expand the OC lead to 3-0. The Eagles continued to hold the Pioneers scoreless and a strong defensive unit only allowed a total of four shots from WBU as they played to the 3-0 shutout victory.

The win is the first for the Eagles this season leaving their record at 1-9 and 1-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

The Lady Eagles will return to the field on Saturday as they host Northwestern Oklahoma State University at 6 p.m. The OC women's and men's teams will both head to Mid-America Christian University on Tuesday with the women kicking off at 1 p.m. and the men to follow at 3 p.m.
