Win over D-3’s top player earns OC’s Poboril conference honor
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 4, 2013) – A pair of wins over ranked foes, including one over the No. 1-ranked player in NCAA Division III, earned Oklahoma Christian’s Martin Poboril the first Heartland Conference men’s tennis player of the week award for 2013.
The conference announced the honor on Monday. Poboril, ranked No. 33 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason NCAA Division II singles rankings, starred as the Eagles ran their winning streak to 15 matches by opening the season with a pair of wins in the Abilene Christian Indoor/Outdoor Invitational in Abilene, Texas.
Poboril, from Pribram, Czech Republic, knocked off Division III No. 1-ranked Aaron Skinner in the Eagles' 7-2 win over Division III No. 9-ranked Trinity (Texas) on Friday. The next day, he downed Division II No. 42 Borja Cortes of Abilene Christian 6-3, 6-4 as the Eagles beat Division II's No. 11-ranked squad 7-2.
In doubles play, Poboril teamed with Bruno Tiberti to beat Trinity’s Jordan Mayer and Erick DelaFuente 8-6 on Friday. Against ACU, Tiberti and Poboril – ranked eighth in Division II – fell to No. 3-ranked Hans Hach and Cortes 8-2.
OC’s previous conference, the Sooner Athletic Conference, did not present tennis player of the week awards. Poboril, a three-time NAIA All-America first-team selection, was named as the National Christian College Athletic Association men’s tennis student-athlete of the week in October following the ITA Division II South Central Regional tournament.
So far during the 2012-13 academic year, OC student-athletes have combined to win 25 Heartland Conference player of the week awards in eight sports.
