OC newcomer Florence named as NCCAA baseball student-athlete of week
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 18, 2014) – A.J. Florence, whose hitting helped Oklahoma Christian win two of three games in its season-opening baseball series against Pittsburg State (Kan.), was named Tuesday as the National Christian College Athletic Association student-athlete of the week.
Florence, a senior shortstop from McKinney, Texas, banged out three doubles in the Eagles’ two wins over Pittsburg State last Friday and Saturday. The transfer from Texas Tech did a little bit of everything – hitting for average (.400) and power (a .700 slugging percentage), stealing a base, driving in four runs and scoring five times, all while playing errorless defense at shortstop.
Florence became the second OC baseball player to receive the NCCAA honor since the university joined the organization before the 2012-13 academic year, joining outfielder Jordan Lopez, who took the honor after last year’s NCCAA Central Region tournament.
OC (3-1) will play its first home games of the season on Friday and Saturday against Heartland Conference rival St. Edward’s (Texas).
