Lady Eagles overcome poor weather conditions in Cowboy Jamboree
STILLWATER, Okla. (Sept. 28, 2013) – Overcoming a 2½-hour rain and lightning delay, Oklahoma Christian posted a solid ninth-place finish among 18 teams on Saturday morning in the College Division race at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree.
Heavy rain began falling in Stillwater shortly after 7 a.m. and officials had to postpone the start of the Lady Eagles’ cross country race until 10:30. Despite the cool and wet conditions, OC freshman Layne Hammer just missed a top-10 individual finish, coming in 11th with a time of 20:00.23 on the five-kilometer course.
Maci Rich, another freshman, was the Lady Eagles’ No. 2 runner for the first time, finishing 52nd in 21:12.73 Sophomore Tara Lewis was OC’s third finisher, taking 67th in 21:35.76.
Two more OC freshmen, Sarah Cobb and Katie Jones, finished just steps apart in 71st and 72nd place, respectively, in the 158-woman field. Cobb posted a time of 21:42.74, while Jones’ time was 21:44.24.
OC’s other finishers were Maria Sargent (83rd in 22:04.00) and Tavia Hoheisel (102nd in 22:36.99).
“I saw some good things today,” OC coach Wade Miller said. “We had a tough task dealing with the weather. I see potential in this group and I’m excited for when we put everything together.”
