Lady Eagles fall 2-1 at Newman on overtime goal
WICHITA, Kan. (Sept. 12, 2013) – Harriet Jakeman scored a golden goal eight minutes into overtime on Thursday night, lifting Newman (Kan.) past visiting Oklahoma Christian 2-1 in a nonconference women’s soccer game at Wilkins Field.
OC outshot Newman 12-10 and seemed to have the momentum heading into overtime, but the Lady Eagles didn’t manage a shot in the extra period.
Jakeman scored the game-winner off an assist from Channing Kelley. The overtime game was the first for OC since the 2011 season.
OC (1-2) and Newman (2-0), both members of the Heartland Conference, will play their regular-season conference game on Oct. 28 in Oklahoma City. Thursday’s game will not count in the league standings.
The Jets took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, as Mei-Mei Senthavy scored on a left-to-right shot inside the penalty box. Somer Helms tied the game for OC at the 62-minute mark, dribbling in from the right side and scoring.
OC goalkeeper Lindsey Williams went the distance and made four saves, while her Newman counterpart, Haley Borchers, recorded seven saves.
“The girls showed a lot of heart coming back from down a goal,” OC coach Randall Robison said. “We dominated the second half but unfortunately didn’t get the winner we deserved.
“We came out flat in overtime. But we’re proud of the ladies tonight. It was a very good performance. Regardless of the result, it shows the strides we have made.”
The Lady Eagles will face a quick turnaround for their next game, hosting Midwestern State (Texas) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
