Heartland honors Abreu Roman as women’s tennis player of the week
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 18, 2013) – Maryfer Abreu Roman on Monday became Oklahoma Christian’s second Heartland Conference women’s tennis player of the week honoree in as many weeks.
The junior from Valencia, Venezuela, went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles last week as OC (4-1) won 7-2 at Harding (Ark.) on Thursday and 6-3 at conference rival Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday.
Strong singles play in the middle of the Lady Eagles’ lineup was key to both wins. Playing at No. 3 singles, Abreu Roman beat Harding's Chelsea Lanier 6-3, 6-4 and Arkansas-Fort Smith's Amy Belanger 6-3, 6-1.
At No. 2 doubles – with a new partner, Gabriela Carrillo – Abreu Roman beat Harding's Lanier and Katie Huff 8-0 and Arkansas-Fort Smith's Taylor Price and Abby Thompson 8-1.
Abreu Roman is 3-2 in singles and 4-1 in doubles this season.
Last week, OC’s Barbora Bozkova won the weekly conference award.
