Heartland Conference weekly golf honor goes to OC’s Johnston
OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 2, 2013) – For the first time this academic year and the fourth time in his career, Oklahoma Christian’s Sam Johnston was named Wednesday as the Heartland Conference’s men’s golfer of the week.
Johnston, a sophomore from San Diego, earned medalist honors for the third time in his career by taking the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate at The Golf Course at Estrella (par 72, 7,139 yards) in Goodyear, Ariz. Johnston posted a three-round score of 7-under-par 209 to top the 98-man field.
He posted three consecutive under-par rounds, improving his score with each round. He fired an impressive 4-under on the back nine of his final round, hitting his approach shot on No. 18 to within five feet of the hole before making the birdie putt to finish off a round of 68.
Johnston, a Division II All-America second-team selection last year, led the No. 21-ranked Eagles to their second team title in three tournaments this fall. The tournament field included schools from the Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences, as well as three squads from California.
Three times as a freshman, Johnston was named as the Heartland’s player of the week. An OC player captured that honor seven times during the 2012-13 campaign. Johnston is the first to do so during the 2013-14 academic year.
