Gley, Helms qualify to join Dennis in NCCAA indoor 200 meters

JOPLIN, Mo. (Jan. 31, 2014) – Seniors Wilmina Gley and Somer Helms ran national qualifying times in the 200 meters on Friday night at the Missouri Southern Lion Invite.

The duo will join teammate Andrea Dennis in running the event at the season-ending National Christian College Athletic Association Indoor Championships. Dennis – who had already qualified for the NCCAA meet in the 200 – led a six-woman contingent at Missouri Southern, finishing 24th in the 63-woman field in 27.29 seconds.

Gley was 31st in 27.58 seconds while Helms was 33rd in 27.70 seconds. Another OC runner, Rebecca Bloodworth, missed the qualifying time by .01 of a second, finishing 34th in 27.71 seconds.

Jerisha Fields was 58th in 29.06 seconds and Kara Drewke was 59th in 29.42 seconds.

Only two other OC women – sisters Miranda Ostlund and Katie Ostlund in the weight throw – competed on Friday, the opening day of the two-day meet.

Miranda Ostlund threw a season-best 41 feet, 4¼ inches (12.60 meters) to improve her potential seed for the NCCAA meet in the event. She finished 25th among 35 competitors. Katie Ostlund was 27th with a mark of 37 feet, 3¼ inches (11.36 meters). She also had already qualified for nationals in the event.
