Fields (100), Cowan (800) qualify for nationals at Southwestern Relays
WINFIELD, Kan. (April 26, 2014) – Jerisha Fields and Maegan Cowan both took advantage of a final chance on Saturday at the Southwestern Relays.
Fields in the 100 meters and Cowan in the 800 meters each posted a qualifying time for the National Christian College Athletic Association Championships and will travel with the Lady Eagles next week to Rome, Ga., for the national meet.
Fields finished ninth in a 13-woman field in the 100 in 13.17 seconds, while Cowan won top honors among 14 women in the 800, finishing in 2:22.09. Teammate Maci Rich was third in 2:28.86 but just missed the NCCAA qualifying standard.
Four other Lady Eagles posted season-best times or marks. Roz Hamilton was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.05 seconds, Kara Drewke was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.82 and Andrea Dennis was sixth in the 400 meters in 1:00.63. In the javelin, Miranda Ostlund won with a throw of 127 feet, 5 inches (38.83 meters) and Hamilton was sixth with a throw of 100 feet, 10 inches (30.73 meters).
OC’s 4x400-meter relay team of Rebecca Bloodworth, Cowan, Somer Helms and Dennis also had a season-best time of 4:01.59. The relay squad joined Drewke, Dennis and Hamilton in posting NCCAA qualifying times while Ostlund and Hamilton had national-qualifying marks.
OC junior Makenzie Brown posted her second straight meet win in the discus, with a top throw of 131 feet, 11¾ inches (40.22 meters), while Ostlund also was fifth in the hammer at 130 feet, 4 inches (39.72 meters). Both had already qualified for nationals in those respective events.
