Efficient Reinke leads Eagles to season sweep of Dallas Baptist
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 16, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian center Will Reinke didn’t score as much as his Dallas Baptist (Texas) counterpart Nick Fox on Saturday afternoon. Reinke didn’t need to.
Fox scored 25 points (albeit on 25 shots), but Reinke answered with 19 points (on 7-of-11 shooting), seven rebounds and four blocked shots, leading OC to a wire-to-wire 76-66 win over the Patriots on Dan Hays Court in the Eagles’ Nest.
OC (15-8) won its third straight game – all against Heartland Conference foes – by jumping to a 10-2 lead in the first 2:34 and never looking back. The Eagles led by as many as 21 points in the second half and completed a regular-season sweep of DBU (8-14).
“They’re hard to play because they run the Princeton offense,” OC coach Dan Hays said. “It’s not an easy cover. I thought our defense was tremendous.
“I thought we were really solid. We had just 10 turnovers. Obviously, we shot well from the free-throw line (81.8 percent, 18 of 22). Just a solid, solid game, without shooting the ball great, but we’re starting to shoot it better.”
Derek Johnson’s 3-pointer at the 17:26 mark of the first half put OC up 10-2 and the Eagles led 17-6 after another 3-pointer, by Nick Tate, 7½ minutes into the game. Fox hit a 3-pointer at the eight-minute mark to pull the Patriots within 19-16, but that is as close as they came the rest of the game.
OC led 36-28 at halftime. DBU was within 44-38 after a 3-pointer by Jonathan Perry with 13:47 left, but the Eagles answered with a 12-0 run during the next four minutes, with six different players each scoring a basket. Reinke’s third 3-pointer of the season put OC ahead 64-43 with 7:03 left.
DBU came no closer than 14 points until the final minute, when coach Blake Flickner had three starters on the floor (including Fox) after Hays inserted OC’s walk-ons to finish the game. The Patriots outscored OC 9-2 in the final 24.6 seconds.
“They got some buckets late,” Hays said. “It was a 16- or 17-point game, so we played well.”
Fox finished 10-of-25 from the field and had five rebounds. Perry had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Patriots.
Three OC players scored 12 points to complement Reinke – Kendre Talley (who went 8-of-8 from the free-throw line), Devan White and Tate (who went 5-of-7 from the field). OC shot 47.3 percent (26 of 55) compared to 38.3 percent for the Patriots (23 of 60).
“Nick (Fox) is very good,” Hays said. “He’s tough. He’s hard to guard. He’s one of those tricky kind of post guys. But if you look, it took him 25 shots to get 25 points. Reinke had 19 points on 11 shots, so there’s a little difference there.”
Hays recorded his 697th career win. OC has three games remaining during the regular season, starting Thursday at Texas A&M International.
