Eagles drop 6-5 OT heartbreaker to Texas-Permian Basin
ODESSA, Texas (Nov. 2, 2013) – As tough losses go, what happened to Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at Texas-Permian Basin most certainly would qualify.
UTPB was down a man in the final two minutes, but tied the game to force overtime, then scored in the second overtime for a 6-5 win over the visiting Eagles.
OC (4-10-1, 2-6 Heartland Conference) lost despite a stellar offensive performance that included two goals by senior Rodgers Otieno and a goal and two assists by Cole Rinke. It was the first time in OC men’s soccer history that the Eagles scored five goals in a game and lost.
UTPB (8-9, 4-4) outshot OC 25-19, but it was the Eagles who scored first. Cole Rinke and Domenico DeGrazia played a free kick into the center of the penalty box and junior defender Matt McLain’s shot beat UTPB goalkeeper Craig Branum in the 18th minute. It was McLain’s third career goal but his first since the 2011 season.
The Falcons quickly answered, scoring a pair of goals in a four-minute span. In the 23rd minute, Brendan Betsill sent a cross into B.J. Rodrick, who volleyed the ball past OC goalkeeper Evan Helker. Nathan Cotterell scored his 14th goal of the season for UTPB in the 26th minute on a 20-yard blast.
OC tied the game in the 35th minute, when Rinke scored off a pass from Ricardo Chinchilla, then went ahead in the 42nd minute on Otieno’s first goal, which after he took a pass from Brandon Little Axe. But UTPB tied the game at 3-3 before halftime on a goal by Rafael Borges.
Otieno put OC up 4-3 in the 67th minute on a play that started with a free kick from midfield by Troy Tippeconnic and continued with a pass from Cody Cook. Again, UTPB answered with a goal by Cotterall, as he took a clearance by Branum, the goalkeeper, and flicked it past Helker in the 70th minute.
Seth Brown scored his first career goal for the Eagles in the 87th minute. Rinke took a free kick from the right side that was blocked, but Brown’s shot from the top of the box put the Eagles up 5-4.
Less than a minute later, Cotterell was ejected after receiving a red card, leaving the Falcons a man down, but they caught a break when the Eagles accidentally knocked the ball into their own net after a corner kick by Jose Cervantes in the 89th minute. The own goal made it 5-5.
The Falcons won in the 107th minute, when Logan Sharp scored on a rebound from a blocked free kick. Sharp’s shot deflected into the right side of the goal.
Helker and Branum each finished with five saves in goal.
OC will close its season on Monday with a conference game at Lubbock Christian (Texas).
