Cowan’s performance at Missouri Southern lands her NCCAA award
OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 15, 2013) – A strong performance at Oklahoma Christian’s opening meet of the indoor season landed sprinter Maegan Cowan a national honor on Tuesday.
Cowan, a sophomore from DeSoto, Texas, was named as the National Christian College Athletic Association’s women’s track and field co-student-athlete of the week. OC pulled off a sweep of the track honors, as senior middle distance runner Brayden Barrientez captured the men’s award.
Cowan competed in three events at the Missouri Southern Open Invitational on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, she finished 11th out of 40 competitors in the 200 meters with a time of 27.24 seconds.
On Saturday, she was fifth among 23 runners in the 400 meters, finishing in 1:01.75. She also ran the anchor leg on OC’s 4x400-meter relay team, which finished fourth among 11 squads in 4:11.61.
“Maegan had a very good first meet and that’s a positive sign,” OC coach Randy Heath said. “We are looking for continued improvement as we progress through the rest of the indoor season.”
Cowan shared the NCCAA honor with Alyssa Figueroa of Houghton (N.Y.).
So far during the 2012-13 school year, 10 OC student-athletes have won NCCAA student-athlete of the week honors a combined 13 times in eight sports.
