Against TAMUK, OC posts 1st road doubleheader sweep since 2011
KINGSVILLE, Texas (Feb. 16, 2013) – Cody Rosecrans had four RBIs and Oklahoma Christian received strong relief pitching in a 12-3 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at Nolan Ryan Field.
OC opened the doubleheader with a 4-3, 10-inning win over a team that was 34th in the balloting in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II poll. The Eagles posted their first road doubleheader sweep since April 5, 2011, when they won a pair at Rogers State.
TAMUK (8-3) chased OC second-game starter Luke Sandoval in the fifth inning and took a 2-0 lead, but relievers Brock Werdel (1-1), Ryan Nash and Jacob Stephenson limited the Javelinas to one run the rest of the way.
OC (3-3) jumped on TAMUK starter Cody Williams for five runs in the sixth. Two runs scored on a single by Rosecrans and Jerry Owen, Sean Murphy and Caden Cleveland followed with run-scoring singles, chasing Williams (0-1).
The Eagles held the 5-2 lead until the eighth, when they posted their biggest inning of the season thus far, scoring seven runs on seven hits off three TAMUK relievers. Rosecrans capped the inning with a two-run home run over the left-field fence that made it 12-2.
Rosecrans, Dillon Andrews, Cleveland and Cory Eastwood each had a pair of hits for OC. Joe Tallerine went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Javelinas, who had seven hits.
In the opener, Jordan Lopez delivered an RBI double off TAMUK reliever Jeremy Flores (0-1) and scored on a single by Caleb Price in the 10th inning, lifting the Eagles to the 4-3 win.
The Javelinas scored once in the bottom of the 10th and had a runner on second base, but OC closer Chris Burgess (1-0) coaxed a groundout from Ryan Guedry and struck out Matt Perez to end the threat. Burgess allowed two hits and struck out three in two innings.
OC tied the game at 2-2 in the ninth, as Markus Carr’s single down the left-field line scored pinch-runner Caleb Price.
