3-2 win over Rockhurst breaks slide for Lady Eagles
BENTONVILLE, Ark. (Feb. 17, 2013) – What had been a frustrating few days for Oklahoma Christian in the 7-States Classic ended with a positive on Sunday afternoon for the Lady Eagles.
OC snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Rockhurst (Mo.) in the Lady Eagles’ final game of the three-day softball event.
Michelle Miller’s RBI single in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted OC (5-4) to the win. Kendra Pierce also had a two-run double in the second inning for the Lady Eagles, capping a week during which she hit .440.
Krystal Rodriguez (1-0) picked up her first career pitching win, throwing four shutout innings against Rockhurst (3-3) and limiting the Hawks to three hits.
OC’s next games will be in a Tuesday doubleheader at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
In their first game Sunday, against Missouri Western, OC outhit the Griffons 9-7 – including a 3-for-3 effort by Sarah Peoples – but left nine runners on base and surrendered a five-run fifth inning in a 6-4 loss.
Pierce’s double scored Peoples in the top of the third, but Missouri Western (7-2) evened the score in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Eagles went up 2-1 in the fifth after Peoples doubled and scored.
Missouri Western broke through in a big way in the bottom of the fifth off OC freshman Danielle Collins (0-1), who was making her first career pitching start, and reliever Lindsy Moore. Maegan Roemmich delivered the big blow, a grand slam that put the Griffons ahead 6-2.
Lauren Chatigny singled and scored on a triple by Peoples in the sixth to pull OC within 6-3, but Peoples was thrown out at home while trying to score on a grounder by Monique Elliott. In the seventh, Collins hit her first career home run, a solo shot that made it 6-4, and the Lady Eagles put the next two runners on base, but couldn’t bring them around.
Janie Smith (4-0) picked up the win in relief for Missouri Western.
