Stanford becomes OC’s first female Division II All-American

OC junior forward McKenzie Stanford has received honorable mention on the WBCA's Division II All-America team.
ATLANTA (March 21, 2016) – For the first time in Oklahoma Christian's NCAA Division II history, a female student-athlete has earned All-America honors.

Forward McKenzie Stanford received honorable mention on the Division II All-America list released Monday night by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, recognizing her for a strong season during which she passed the 1,000-point career mark and helped the Lady Eagles finish fourth in the Heartland Conference.

She is the fifth OC student-athlete to earn All-America honors in Division II, joining Sam Johnston (men's golf), Blake Stringer (baseball), Dillon Endecott (baseball) and John Moon (men's basketball).

"What a great honor for McKenzie in our first year of full membership in Division II," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "No one deserves it more. She is one of the hardest workers in the conference."

Stanford, a 6-foot junior from Perkins, is a two-time first-team selection on the All-OklahomaSports.net honor teams, which recognize the top Division II players in Oklahoma. She was named as the Heartland Conference's player of the week four times this season – the most of any player – and averaged 14.9 points (fourth-best in the conference) and 6.1 rebounds per game.

She will enter next season with 1,182 career points, 22nd on OC's career scoring list.

She has been a second-team All-Heartland selection by league coaches the past two seasons. Coaches from around the nation vote on the WBCA All-America honor teams.

Stanford was one of four Heartland players honored by the WBCA. Nicole Hampton of undefeated, No. 1-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) was a first-team All-America pick, while a pair of Texas A&M International players, Keiona Mathews and Jessica Prieto, received honorable mention. Forty players nationally were honored – 10 on the first team, 30 on the honorable mention list.

Stanford also is a talented high jumper, earning All-South Central Region honors in 2015 after tying OC's outdoor school record with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches. In 2014-15, she finished as the National Christian College Athletic Association runner-up in the high jump, after earning NCCAA All-America first-team and NCCAA Central Region player of the year honors in basketball.

She is one of only four OC student-athletes ever to earn All-America honors in two non-related sports, as she also was an NCCAA All-American in track and field in 2015.
