OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 3, 2016) – A pair of shutouts against league foes earned Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper
Evan Helker the Heartland Conference men's soccer defensive player of the week award on Monday.
The senior from Edmond was honored for his play in a 0-0 tie against St. Mary's (Texas) on Thursday and a 1-0 win over Texas A&M International on Saturday, results that ended OC's five-game losing streak.
He had five saves against St. Mary's and made five more against TAMIU, including two of the outstanding variety that prevented what appeared to be near-certain goals by the Dustdevils. His strong work in the goal helped his team withstand a 17-5 edge in shots by TAMIU and preserve the win.
The two shutouts – his first of the season – raised Helker's career total in that statistical category to 11.
Helker previously was named as the Heartland Conference defensive player of the week once each in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 seasons.
